The MSc programme

“Master in Law & Economics” of the University of Piraeus in Washington DC

29/09/2018-7/10/2018

The MSc programme “Master in Law & Economics” of the University of Piraeus successfully completed an educational trip to Chicago, with a view towards promoting students’ continuous learning, the creation of communication channels with universities and businesses in the US, the students’ international orientation and the expansion of their academic and professional network.

More specifically, the programme visited:

  • The University of Chicago: Students attended a lecture on the economic analysis of courts by prof. William H. J. Hubbard at the University of Chicago, the spiritual parent of the MSc programme “Master in Law & Economics”. Prof. Hubbard and the students also discussed contemporary challenges and opportunities faced by legal professionals in Greece, and in the modern, globalised context at large.
  • The Loyola University Chicago Quinlan School of Business: Students attended a lecture on the American economy by prof. Tassos Malliaris at the Loyola University Chicago Quinlan School of Business. Prof. Malliaris provided students with resources for understanding the American market and its differences with the Greek one, as well as predicting and developing a competitive advantage in the domestic and global markets.
  • The Federal Circuit Court of Appeals: The students attended the hearing of an appeal regarding a patent.
  • The Dentons Global Law Firm: The students attended a series of presentations by senior executives of the Dentons Global Law Firm on topics concerning lawyers working in the global market, and were informed about internship opportunities at the firm’s US branches.
  • The United States Courthouse: Judge Charles P. Kocoras welcomed students into his office at the United States Courthouse and spoke to them about his personal story, obstacles, motivations and career path in the American market, one of the most competitive in the world. The students recognised Judge Charles P. Kocoras as a mentor, and a driving force in the recognition, upholding and implementation of their aspirations.
  • The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago: The students attended a presentation on the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago’s history and contribution and visited its museum.
  • The Loyola University Chicago Law School: The students attended a lecture on intellectual property by prof. Cynthia Ho, presenting opportunities and threats in the global market.
  • The University of Illinois at Chicago: A memorandum of cooperation was signed by the Rector of the University of Illinois, prof. Christos Amirides, and the Dean of the Department of International and European Economic Studies, prof. Aristotelis Tziampiris, creating the foundation for academic, educational and research cooperation between the two universities.
  • Members of the Greek diaspora in Chicago: Graduate students had the opportunity to meet entrepreneurs of the Greek diaspora in Chicago and discuss career opportunities in the US, as well as business partnerships between Greece and the USA.

This educational trip was made possible by the efforts of the programme’s director, professor Victoria Pekka-Economou, to promote the programme internationally and build its academic network.
