The MSc programme

“Master in Law & Economics” of the University of Piraeus in Washington DC – 3/02/2018-11/02/2018

In the context of strengthening the MSc programme’s “Master in Law & Economics” international orientation, a very special and successful educational trip took place in Washington DC. This was a unique experience, according to our students, and as they noted, they obtained valuable knowledge, widened their network and created favourable conditions for future academic and professional partnerships.

 

More specifically, the programme visited:

 

  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF): At the IMF’s headquarters in Washington DC, graduate students met Dr. Gerry Rice, the IMF’s representative in Washington DC, and professor Michael Psalidopoulos, Greece’s representative at the Together, they discussed contemporary challenges and opportunities faced by Greece in the modern, globalised context.
  • The State Department of the United States of America: The students attended a presentation on the State Department’s history and
  • The George Washington University, Elliot School of Foreign Affairs: A memorandum of cooperation was signed between the Vice President of George Washington University, prof. Leo M. Chalupa, and the Rector of the University of Piraeus, Angelos Kotios, creating a strong foundation for strengthening academic, educational and research cooperation between the two university. Graduate students also attended a series of lectures focused on opportunities and threats in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East regions.
  • The World Bank (World Bank Group – WBG): At the World Bank’s headquarters in Washington DC, graduate students attended a series of presentations by Dennis Robitaille (Vice President & CIO of WBG) and Mr. Arthur J. Riel (Director of WBG Finance, Cloud & Middleware Engineering) on the World Bank’s contribution. Students were also informed about internship opportunities at the World Bank’s US branches, and they visited the World Bank’s museum.
  • The Supreme Court of Washington: The students attended the hearing of a case and visited the Supreme Court’s museum.
  • The American Jewish Committee (AJC): The students attended a presentation on the AJC’s history and
  • The American Hellenic Institute (AHI): Mr. Nick Larigakis (President & COO of AHI) welcomed students into his office and presented the AHI’s contribution and future He also briefed students on career opportunities in the US and how to attract them.

 

This educational trip was made possible by the efforts of the programme’s director, professor Victoria Pekka-Economou, to strengthen the programme’s relations with the international academic community and widen its international partnerships, strengthening the programme’s overall international orientation.
